(Bainbridge) – The Nathaniel Massie Chapter hosted the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum in Bainbridge, Ohio for the marking of the grave of Nathaniel Willis, a participant in the Boston Tea Party. The original tombstone of Willis was discovered abandoned and moved to the Bainbridge Cemetery before the ceremony.
Evan O’ Brian and Kristin Harris of the Museum and Johnathan Lane of Revolution 250 Massachusetts Historical Society along with Phyllis Wheatley portrayed by Kathryn Phillips of the Museum marked the grave with the museum marker. Ohio State Regent Susan Leininger laid a memorial wreath and spoke to the nearly 150 people present.
The recreated Joseph Ogle Company of the Ohio company of the Virginia Militia presented the colors followed by three musket volleys. The ceremony was honored to welcome direct descendants of Willis, who continue to farm the family property. Many state officials were on hand for the ceremony.
This event officially begins the chapter’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. Nathaniel Massie daughters began America 250 activities in 2021 with grave cleaning and marking of patriots buried in Ross County Ohio, having completed over 100 thus far.
